Saso wins her 2nd Major

US Womenā€™s Open: Saso wins as Minjee Bombs

The 5 things you need to know from the US Womenā€™s Open are:

  1. Yuka Saso, the Filipino turned Japanese golfer, became the youngest ever player to win 2 US Womenā€™s Opens, hitting an incredible array of shots (including driving the green on the Par 4, 16th) and demonstrating she is made for championship golf in tough conditions.

  2. Aussie Minjee Lee looked in the box seat, holding a 3-shot lead in the early stages of the final round. Unfortunately, she bombed from there on, carding an 8-over round of 78 to finish T9 and drawing (harsh) comparisons from some commentators to Greg Normanā€™s choke at The Masters in 1996.

  3. World number 1, Nelly Korda, was ejected out of contention on only her 3rd hole of the tournament. Playing the back 9 first on Thursday, she made her way to the brutal Par 3, 12th, where she proceeded to rack up a score of 10 and effectively end her chances. Nelly would miss the cut.

  4. A host of other big names also missed the cut including Rose Zhang, Lydia Ko, defending champion Allisen Corpuz and Lexi Thompson (who also announced she will be retiring from professional golf at the end of 2024).

  5. 15-year-old amateur, Asterick Talley, not only made the cut by was only a few shots off the lead through 36 holes. She ended up finishing a respectable T44 and equaled the low amateur for the week.

PGAT: Bobby Mac gets it done in Canada

The 5 things you need to know from the RBC Canadian Open are:

  1. Scotsman, Robert MacIntyre, won his first PGAT title with his dad on the bag at the RBC Canadian Open. Both men were in tears on the 18th green following the win as the significance of the occasion overwhelmed them. Bobby Mac had a 4-shot lead heading into Sundayā€™s final round, and despite challengers coming from all angles, he was able to grind out a 1-stroke win.

  2. Ben Griffin, Canadian Mack Hughes and Kiwi Ryan Fox all came after MacIntyre, and his 4-shot lead had evaporated by the 3rd hole after Hughes carded 3 straight birdies on holes 2 through 5. In the end, it was Griffin who got closest to Bobby, carding a 65 to narrowly miss by 1.

  3. Rory McIlroy started the final round 7 shots off the lead and looked to be charging when he was 4-under through 7 holes on Sunday to get himself in the mix. He would finish T4, 3-shots back from MacIntyre.

  4. Despite the win earning him an exemption into this weekā€™s Memorial Tournament at Muirfield, Bobby Mac has decided to head back to Scotland to celebrate the win with family and friends. You have to admire his decision to pass on a PGAT Signature Event with a huge purse just to get on the drink with the boys šŸ˜‚šŸ».

  5. Another disappointing week for the Aussies with Adam Scott finishing T42, and Harrison Edycott and Aaron Baddeley both missing the cut.

šŸ“Quick Bites

Here are some golf quick bites for you to snack on:

  • Golfā€™s Longest Day (US Open Qualifiers) - Golfā€™s Longest Day delivered its traditional array of up-and-comers, surprises, veterans and inspired reactions after qualifying for the United States Open. Only 2 of 17 LIV golfers were successful and Aussie Adam Scottā€™s run of consecutive Majors could be at an end after losing a playoff to countryman Cam Davis. Check out all the results via Monday Q.

  • New PGAT Policy Board Member speaks out - former tour player and new addition to the PGATā€™s Policy Board, Joe Ogilvie, has gone in-depth on all things golf with Eamon Lynch, including his assessment of Jay Monahanā€™s performance, Policy Board dysfunction and the prospects of a deal with the PIF.

  • USGA considering pathways for LIV - Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer says the USGA is looking seriously into creating a pathway for LIV Golfers into future U.S. Opens. Golf Channel has quoted him stating ā€œitā€™s reasonable to expect that at some point yes, we would create a pathway or someway that we would get those great playersā€.

  • Charlie Hull ripping darts - Aside from Yuka Saso, the next biggest story of the week at the US Womenā€™s Open was the newfound fascination with Charley Hullā€™s cachet in wielding a cigarette, or ā€œripping dartsā€ as some would have it.
