LIV’s Season Finale
LIV Golf’s Season wrapped up over the weekend with the Teams Championship featuring the 16 teams competing for a total purse of $50 million (yes you read that correctly!!!). Held at the Trump National Doral Golf Club in Miami, the tournament consisted of head-to-head matchplay in the first two rounds, followed by stroke play on the final day. Despite being somewhat complicated, the format of the event was refreshing and certainly a great change up for golf fans. The course, also known as the Blue Monster, also provided a tough test for LIV finale.
The final round saw the 4Aces GC, RangeGoats GC, Torque GC, and Crushers GC fighting it out for the top 4 spots. The team with the lowest combined score of all four players would claim the top prize - $14 million to be shared across the team members. Ultimately, Crushers GC, led by captain Bryson DeChambeau, emerged as the champions carding a combined score of 11-under overall, two strokes ahead of second placed RangeGoats GC (captain Bubba Watson) and Torque GC (captain Joaquin Niemann) who closed out the podium placings.
For the Aussie team, Ripper GC, it was a weekend to forget. In the first round, they were unable to beat the Cleeks GC, who had played pathetically all year. Despite being up in two of the three matches well into Friday’s first round, Ripper GC faded late to lose 2-1 to a team that they certainly should have beaten comfortably. This left the Aussies relegated to playing for places 9 to 12. Eventually, following the final day of stroke play, they took out 9th position and a result they certainly won't be happy with.
Minjee reaches new heights
Minjee Lee claimed her 10th career LPGA title in a playoff at the BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea. The 27-year-old Australian defeated Alison Lee in a playoff after stuffing an approach shot close on the first extra hole. Lee became the 5th player this season to win multiple titles (after winning the Kroger Queen City Championship) and only the 3rd Aussie to win 10 or more LPGA titles, joining Karrie Webb and Jan Stephenson. Amid a stacked leaderboard which included the likes of Lydia Ko, Celine Boutier and Angel Yin, Minjee shot a final-round 68 to finish at 16 under, while Alison Lee birdied her last two holes in regulation to force a playoff with a 67. Both players found the fairway on the first playoff hole, and whilst Alison hit a decent approach shot to about 18 feet, Minjee fired at the pin landing her ball centimeters from the cup and leaving herself with a 5-foot putt to win - which she did not miss.
Morikawa wins in Japan
Collin Morikawa (not to be confused with Mikumi Horikawa) ended his 27-month winless streak on the PGA Tour with a dominant performance at the Zozo Championship in Japan. The 26-year-old shot a final-round 7-under 63 to win by six strokes over Eric Cole and Beau Hossler at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club. Morikawa claimed his sixth PGA Tour title and his first since the Open Championship in July 2021. Morikawa started the final round two shots behind leader Justin Suh but surged ahead with four birdies on the front nine and three more on the back nine. He had a clean card with no bogeys and made a birdie putt from six feet on the last hole to seal the victory with style. Morikawa earned $1.8 million for his win.
As for the Aussies in the field, Min Woo Lee was best placed at T6, with Cam Davis finishing T12 and Adam Scott (up in Japan doubt to please his main sponsor Uniqlo) limping to a T41 finish.
Morikawa joined LPGA winner Minjee Lee and her brother Minwoo (who won last week in Macau) for some private jet action enroute to their next tour stops.
🍴 Quick Bites
Here are some golf tid-bits for you to snack on:
The TGL has announced its full field of players now with the new golf league scheduled to kick off in January 2024. Spearheaded by Tiger and Rory, the TGL certainly has gained significant traction signing a TV rights deal with ESPN and also announcing some big names as TGL team owners including Steph Curry, Serena and Venus Williams and Michaelle Wie West.
Brooks Koepka has unloaded publicly AGAIN on his hapless teammate Matt Wolff…”you can't help people that don't want help”. Surely Woolf will be traded before the start of LIV’s next season!
The Shark and Phil are still very bullish on LIV’s future with Greg passing comment earlier this week and Phil promising that the LIV roster is only going to get stronger next year with plenty of interest from players wanting to join. Time will tell…
